Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde is the best purifying fan
I have been able to test the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde air purifier fan for over a month, a hybrid product that I have fallen in love with due to its effectiveness and ease of use and which I think is the best I have ever analyzed.
The heat hits summer after summer with increasing force due to the effects of climate change, and there are few Spanish homes that do not have some device at home to relieve themselves of the summer temperatures. Air conditioning is the preferred option but in many cases we have to make do with a fan.
After a lifetime of using fans of all kinds – I grew up between the provinces of Madrid and Toledo – I have been able to test for more than a month the one that has become one of my greatest allies this summer: the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 fan and air purifier.
This product from Dyson, a company known especially for its cordless vacuum cleaners and hair dryers and which has recently gone off the rails with wireless headphones, fits in perfectly with the rest of the brand’s catalogue, with a very clear focus on design and is in line with the highest range of the moment (599 euros).
Before getting into the subject, let me tell you one thing: although you can probably find fans with more power and at a lower price, its main function as an air purifier makes it the best device of its kind that I have ever tried.
It exudes elegance thanks to its bladeless design
The Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde follows the line of other devices from Dyson, a brand known for the good design of its products, and manages to blend in perfectly with the decor of your home.
This purifying fan is far from being a small product, as it measures one meter in height and has a base with a diameter of more than 20 centimeters. For how big it is, its weight of 4.65 kilos seems reasonable to me and allows it to be moved from one part of the house to another without too much difficulty.
Because of its dimensions, you will have to choose carefully where to place the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde, as it is designed to be seen and to be in a central position in the room thanks to its fairly long cable, 1.8 meters. However, its appearance makes it really easy to combine aesthetically anywhere in your home, especially living rooms and bedrooms, where I have used it.
The Dyson device is made up of a cylindrical base, which is gold in the version I tested, although with silver details on the top and bottom. On the top it also has a circular LCD screen that displays information such as the selected operating mode or the data collected by its sensors. It is quite small, but visible, so it fulfills its function.
The base allows the fan to rotate and also houses the HEPA filters, which are revealed by a system of triggers on both sides. I must admit that I hate dismantling the tanks of household devices because it is rarely easy and intuitive for me, but until now I had not come across a mechanism as simple and convenient as the one in this product, something in which the good hand of the British brand is evident.
The main distinguishing feature of this product is its white top, which is an elongated oval with flat sides and a hollow. Inside this piece is the fan, with air escaping from the black slits at the front or the curved rear.
Dyson has opted for a fan design with no visible blades, something that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also saves you safety problems, for example, if you have children or pets at home, as it is now impossible for them to get cut because the blades are completely hidden.
It’s a design that comes at a price, yes, but its quality is so high that the 599 euros it costs make it a product for those who are looking for good performance but also aesthetics in the home.
Performance: the air in my house is grateful for its quality as a purifier…
Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde has a name that says a lot about its performance, because it is a purifier rather than a fan. Which doesn’t make it a bad fan, but it does give you clues that its main function is not that, but rather that of a purifier.
As an air purifier, the Dyson device is by far the best you can buy right now on the market. At the base it contains HEPA filters with fiberglass and an internal active carbon filter through which the air passes and is cleaned of 99.95% of particles up to 0.1 microns, a microscopic size.
This device is capable of eliminating different types of waste that are common in the air in homes, starting with particles of up to 2.5 microns – including smoke, industrial emissions and candles – or up to 10 microns – pollen and allergens – followed by formaldehyde – a pollutant that emanates from furniture, paint and glue – volatile organic compounds – potentially unpleasant odours – and nitrogen dioxide and other oxidizing gases – harmful gases emitted by vehicles and gas cookers.
In my experience, I have noticed that the air in my flat, which often becomes stale because it is an interior space, improves substantially. I no longer have the problem of having to open all the windows, and above all it is much better to breathe after cooking, when the vapors and smells could previously cause more havoc. It is true that I do not have any allergy problems, but even I have felt it.
Other people who are more sensitive to the air who have been in my house have noticed an improvement in the air, like my partner, so maybe this will give you some more guidance on this section.
The Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde not only removes particles, but the brand has added multiple sensors so you can monitor the health of the air in your home, as well as other influencing factors such as temperature and relative humidity.
It is designed so that you can also use it in winter as a purifier without cooling the house too much with the fan, as it has a system that reverses the air flow, so that instead of blowing forwards it blows backwards, thus avoiding strong air currents. When you activate this function you can clearly hear a noise inside it.
Perhaps the mode I liked the most was the automatic mode, which turns on periodically and turns off when the air levels return to the recommended levels. The night mode is also useful, as it operates at a lower power level and can be programmed for a specific time – 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours.
… but it is not the most powerful or silent fan
As a fan, I must admit that it is not the most powerful fan I have tried, although I consider it to be perfectly functional in this sense too.
It has up to 10 power levels, with a very slight sound up to level 6 – the automatic one – but it gets louder than I expected when you reach the maximum levels, where it is quieter than a traditionally designed blade fan but it will make you turn up the volume of the TV.
The fan from Dyson has helped me to get through an eternal summer heatwave in Madrid during July and August, but I must admit that, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees in the shade, and with 36 degrees inside my flat at times, sometimes it has fallen a little short as a fan after the initial phase in which its good power seems impossible for its hollow design.
On the plus side, I loved the versatility of its design, which allows it to rotate in different directions. As a fan, it can rotate up to 350 degrees, with intermediate positions of 180 degrees, 90 degrees and 45 degrees. I used the latter two the most in my day-to-day life, but it’s great to have all these options for every imaginable location.
Easy to use thanks to the remote control and the MyDyson app
Despite the comprehensive features of the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde, it is a very easy product to use at all times thanks to two ways of controlling it: via the remote control or the brand’s MyDyson app.
The remote control is my preferred way of interacting with the device. With a curved and compact gold design, Dyson includes two units in the box, which is ideal because one is always located above the fan by means of a magnetic system, while the other remote control can be kept on the sofa or on the coffee table in the living room, for example.
These remote controls do not run on batteries but have a battery that, according to the British manufacturer, is enough for the entire lifespan of the device, which I think is very convenient and a great idea.
Another way to control the device is through the app of the brand, MyDyson, which allows you to connect it to your home WiFi network to control it remotely, whether you are in another room or you want to purify and ventilate the air in your house a few minutes before you get home from work. You can do this whenever the fan is plugged in, either manually, by programming routines or by voice commands.
Using the app is a very good way not only of setting the different modes of the device but also of checking the air quality levels in a very visual way, with the possibility of accessing historical data to detect possible anomalies. Another interesting function is that of programming routines that adapt to your lifestyle.
The purifier is equipped with a HEPA and carbon filter, which should be sufficient for
years of use unless you live in an excessively polluted environment. If you have to change it because its effectiveness has been reduced, it costs 99 euros – only buy the official ones sold by Dyson itself to avoid problems – while if you need another remote control, the brand sells them for 33.90 euros.
It would have been appreciated if the box included at least one additional 360º filter for the future, because one sixth of its final value seems a bit excessive for a spare part.
Conclusion: is the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde worth buying?
The fan purifier Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde is a risky recommendation due to its high-end price, starting at 599 euros, but it would be the model I would recommend if the price is not an issue for you and you want the best.
No other brand offers a design like Dyson’s, something in which the brand once again demonstrates its power in this device based on a bladeless operation that at first seems like magic and with an appearance that fits in with any possible decoration and room. It is made to be seen, so it doesn’t really matter where you place it.
There are better fans if that’s all you want, but in this case the great virtue of the device lies in the air purification of its HEPA and carbon filters, which is designed to meet the main needs of today’s average household and focuses on what not everyone necessarily notices, but which has an impact on your health.
If you suffer from regular respiratory allergies, the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde purifying fan justifies its price by giving you enormous peace of mind throughout the year and providing visibility into the quality of the air you breathe at home for most of the day.
