Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Z Fold 6

I have reviewed the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 very thoroughly and both are excellent foldables, but each one is aimed at a very specific audience, so which one is it for you?
Both have already been reviewed in this house. The clamshell type is a total improvement in terms of camera and performance, while the book type is a constant déjà vu, but it also hides many changes inside that elevate the experience to the maximum.
What is clear is that these 2 Samsung foldables offer a sublime high-end experience, but it is also clear that they have a different soul and are aimed at a different audience.
Just to give you a helping hand, here you will find a comparison between the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 so you can decide which one is for you.
Design and connectivity: both are extremely well-made, although I prefer the Flip 6 for its portability
The first thing that stands out about both devices is that they have undergone a major redesign compared to the previous generation and now look more similar to the Samsung Galaxy S24 line. That is to say, flat aluminum edges and squarer corners.
Personally, I really like the change and it also unifies the high-end Samsung style. That said, there are a couple of things that are not so convincing in both the Flip and the Fold.
In the clamshell type, it feels bigger when closed and in the book type those squarer corners make it dig into your hand when you are using it open. It’s not uncomfortable, but it is worth mentioning.
Of course, both also have very positive points: the Flip 6 feels very sturdy and solid thanks to its flat metal edges and the Fold 6 is really comfortable to handle for hours in open mode thanks to a weight that stays at 239 grams.
As for connectivity, neither of them are lacking in any way: Wi-Fi 6e, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, 5G and USB-C 3.2.
Now, which one to choose? It all depends on what you are looking for, as both perform excellently: sturdy and beautiful premium design, outstanding construction and very comfortable in the hand.
In my personal case I’ll go with the Flip, simply because I prefer something more portable and smaller, but the Fold is the size of a normal mobile and gains versatility by being able to open like a book.
Screen and sound: an extraordinary internal panel versus total versatility
As for screens, both devices perform at an excellent level, but the truth is that they have their pros and cons.
In this sense, it is time to compare the two internal displays with the two external ones which, although they have little in common, is what makes the most sense given how I have used the devices in my day-to-day life.
The Z Flip 6 features a 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED 2X panel with everything you could ask of a current high-end mobile: 2,600 nits of maximum brightness, HDR10+ and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Its great strength? The fact that the notch is practically unnoticeable.
Samsung’s work in this respect is amazing, as it is only noticeable when you run your finger across the panel or with a specific reflection, so you will more or less have the same experience as with a traditional mobile phone.
The Z Fold 6, on the other hand, has a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a resolution of 1,856 x 2,160 pixels which, once again, has everything: 120 Hz, HDR10+ support and a brightness of 2,600 nits. Now, here the fold in the screen is very evident and quite visible, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is an excellent panel.
In terms of feel, with the Z Flip 6 you’re ultimately going to have the same experience as you do with a normal smartphone, while with the Z Fold 6, it offers you an experience closer to a tablet, so it wins in terms of versatility.
Having looked at the internals, which are what you are really going to use the most on a day-to-day basis, it’s time to pay attention to the externals.
The Z Flip 6 has a 3.4-inch AMOLED panel that runs at 60 Hz, which I don’t consider a problem either, as it is not designed for consuming content.
Its main function? Using certain widgets to avoid opening the screen and 5 apps to avoid opening the screen: WhatsApp, Google Maps, YouTube and the Samsung and Google Messages apps.
And the truth is that it does the job, although it is true that it lags far behind in terms of usability compared to the competition from the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra
For its part, the Z Fold 6 has a 6.3-inch screen with a resolution of 968 x 2,376 pixels with a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel and 120 Hz refresh rate and although it is true that it has a similar size to a traditional mobile phone, personally I found it narrow and very tall, so much so that its use, in my case, has been merely token.
In the end, the Z Flip 6 is designed to speed up certain things like viewing notifications, writing quick replies or simply checking the time, while the Fold 6 offers a more traditional experience and doesn’t really stand out.
Performance and software: excessive power and an operating system with AI at its core
Here, the South Korean firm pulls out all the stops and hides a Snapdragon 8 gen 3 processor with 12 GB of RAM in both devices and the tests speak for themselves.
However, they also have a problem: they get hotter than they should both during charging and during use in high-power situations. It’s not a cause for concern, but they do heat up more than normal.
As for the software, I can only applaud. Not only for how well their custom Android 14 works through One UI 6.1.1, but above all for the new AI functions that are present in both the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Z Fold 6.
Some were already present in the Galaxy S24 family and others have arrived very recently, making Samsung’s AI practically a real assistant with which you can do almost anything, something that can be seen on a day-to-day basis.
Photo editing with options to create new versions as if they were 3D animation or comics, to circle to search, to play in slow motion, any video by simply pressing and holding, automatic transcription of voice notes, article summaries, translation… The possibilities are endless.
Cameras: very good results in both devices, although the Fold offers more versatility
Here there is good news for the Flip, on the one hand, and bad news for those who were hoping for some changes in the Fold, on the other.
The former raises the bar with a fantastic set of cameras that finally live up to its price. The photographic section was always a step below the rest of the specifications and here, finally, it rises to the next level.
This is its camera system:
Main camera: 50-megapixel wide-angle, f/1.8, 23mm and OIS
Ultra-wide-angle 12-megapixel, f/2.2, with 123-degree range
Selfie camera: 10-megapixel, f/2.2, perforated in the inner screen
As for the Z Fold 6, it uses the same system as the previous generation, so the feeling is bittersweet.
It’s a very good set-up and it works perfectly, but I was still expecting a little effort in this area.
This is the camera configuration of the Galaxy Z Fold 6:
50-megapixel wide-angle main camera, f/1.8, 23mm
10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, f/2.4
12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, 123˚, 12mm, f/2.2
10-megapixel external front camera, f/2.2, 24mm
And in terms of results? Well, both devices perform similarly in practically everything. The only thing in which the Fold “beats” the Flip is that it offers greater versatility by having more options at your fingertips, but the truth is that the camera system is very even and, above all, very complete in both cases.
Both have that Samsung effect on images that tend to oversaturate colors, especially greens and blues, which, if you like, is an absolute joy and they achieve an excellent image composition.
The portrait mode is also really good, both indoors and outdoors, with a very remarkable blur in any kind of condition.
Autonomy: there is no difference between the two and both last for a day of use
As for the battery, it is still the main Achilles heel in both devices, although there have been improvements.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a capacity of 4,000 mAh, an improvement of 300 mAh over last year, but this is still a long way from the 5,000 or more that traditional phones already have.
For its part, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 maintains the 4,400 mAh of the previous generation and repeats the 25 W fast charge (no charger in the box), 15 W wireless and 4.5 W reversible charge, the same as the clamshell model.
To give you an idea, I start the day at 6 in the morning and after intensive use of social networks, the odd game to kill some downtime, camera and browser use in the car, the Z Flip 6 ends the day with 33%, while the Z Fold 6 does so with 28%.
The difference, as you can see, is negligible, since you’re going to have to plug both in to face a new day.
Verdict: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which one is for you?
Let’s be very clear that both devices are outstanding, there’s no doubt about that, but in the end they both have very different souls and are aimed at different audiences.
So which one is for you?
Personally, if you want a top-of-the-range but much cheaper folding device, with a delightful main screen and a camera system that finally does justice to its price, as well as a beautiful design that is truly foldable and very manageable, the Z Flip 6 is the best option.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for a device that offers you the greatest possible versatility thanks to its excellent tablet-style screen, outstanding performance and a device more focused on the professional environment, the Z Fold 6 is the one that will suit you best.
