Motorola Edge 50 Fusion is very good to the touch

Analysis Blog Devices News Technology

Motorola is one of the most important brands in the mobile phone market, even more so since Lenovo acquired it a decade ago. However, the real (and spectacular) growth in this segment has only recently become visible.

In just one year, Motorola has managed to increase the number of handsets sold in Spain eightfold, while during the first three months of 2024 it reached a market share of 6.2%, according to Lenovo’s own financial results.

This is due, among other things, to one of its best-known families, the Edge series. I have been able to test the mid-range terminal in this series, the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion, and I think it is very worthwhile in its price range.

The Motorola Edge 50 Fusion is the most tactilely pleasing mobile I have tested

Motorola offers this phone in up to 3 different colors, each with its own personality. In this case, I tried the Hot Pink, which comes with the most pleasant-to-touch rear finish I’ve seen on any phone.

The material is very reminiscent of velvet to the touch, so it’s not slippery or has any annoying reflections, and it’s also vegan. Although it is also true that it accumulates small specks of dust as soon as you rest it on a surface, but you will hardly notice them.

As for its weight, it barely reaches 170 grams and it feels like a phone that you could spend the whole day with without any problem. In your pocket, you won’t even notice it sticking out, so if you are looking for a fairly compact phone, it could be a good option.

Otherwise, this mid-range model adjusts connectivity to its segment, and has all the basics: 5G, NFC for contactless payments and Bluetooth 5.2, one of the latest versions. In this sense, you won’t have any problems connecting other devices or losing connection with, for example, headphones.

In turn, as positive news, it comes with an on-screen fingerprint reader and quickly recognizes unlocking. Additionally, you can also have 2 SIM cards, so you can’t ask for more in this area from the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion.

Its screen is very well used and has an almost unique rate of 144 Hz

Its great design is combined with a very well-finished panel that is used to 92%, with slight waterfall curves on the sides, and which is of amazing quality.

In everyday use, it can reach a maximum brightness peak of 1,600 nits, maintaining very faithful color even when the sun is directly shining on the terminal’s screen.

As if this were not enough, Motorola has opted to introduce a refresh rate of 144 Hz, which is usually seen more among mobiles aimed at the gaming public. In its case, it allows it to make the most of a somewhat fair performance, which I will talk about later.

As for the sound, it comes with Dolby Atmos and is noticeable at full volume, while not greatly distorting the audio at this level.

However, I would have liked to find some kind of equalizer, to adjust the sound to the use, whether in video games or when listening to music. In any case, this is not a negative point.

Performance adjusted to its range with very useful software, although with a lot of bloatware

As it did with the Pro version of this series, Motorola has had to cut back somewhere to fit into the mid-range, so it has opted to add Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 processor, a generation that has been on the market for quite some time.

In synthetic analyses, according to AnTuTu, it is quite close to its big brother, the latter with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 inside. So, although it is not powerless, you will notice on several occasions that it falls a little short.

For example, in more demanding video games, you won’t be able to access the maximum values; however, it is worth remembering that a very positive point is that it allows access to 144 Hz refresh rate, which you will notice mostly in this type of scenario.

Beyond this, it is worth noting how well Motorola handles the chosen operating system, Android 14, achieving a layer very much based on accessibility, even if an Android terminal chokes on you.

Thus, it has several Motorola applications of its own with which you will have access to configurations of all kinds, from private folders to screen modifications; in other words, the same things that you would have to search for in the Android settings menu.

However, it also suffers from the so-called bloatware, with at least 12 pre-installed applications, with video games that, personally, are not my favorites. So you will have to uninstall them, as it does not allow you to choose this in the initial configuration of the mobile, as in other brands.

A full day of battery life with a more than remarkable fast charge

As for the battery, at 5,000 mAh, it has been one of the phones with the best autonomy I have tested, being able to reach more than a day easily; as always, it will depend on the use you want to make of it, so if you use the camera a lot or play games you won’t reach that duration.

On a very positive note, Motorola has chosen to include a 68 W charger in the box, so you won’t have to buy one.

In this case, to fully charge it you only have to wait about 45 minutes. I know it’s not the best value, but in this price range it’s a very good option if you’re looking for a phone that you can have available in a short time.

With its main camera and its ultra-wide angle camera you will get quite good photos.

As you will see below, the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion offers the best of the two lenses it integrates. Thus, it omits others such as the macro sensor, something that I personally like (you can access it digitally in the camera interface).

This is the camera configuration of the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion:
Sony LYTIA LYT-700C 50-megapixel main camera, with an aperture value of f/1.88 and optical image stabilizer (OIS).

As for its front camera, I was quite surprised that it has hardly any noise, even in situations where the lighting is not exactly optimal.

In this sense, I think it’s a selfie camera that could serve you in almost all scenarios, although if I have to choose, I’ll stick with the photos from the main camera.

Is the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion worth buying?

After several weeks of being able to thoroughly test the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion, I think it is a very remarkable mid-range mobile if you are looking for something in this price range with sections to highlight.

So, for 399 euros (even less with offers from distributors) you will have at your fingertips a mobile phone with an eye-catching design, a 10-inch screen and a main camera.

What’s more, it doesn’t exceed the price you can see from other manufacturers in the same range, so the final decision is entirely yours.
